Nanxiang Bailian: A Modern Take on Traditional Cantonese

Reimagining the Past with Above Space

In this case, Above Space took high priority in reproducing and reflecting the historical traditional Cantonese style with a modern architectural twist when designing Nanxiang Bailian restaurant. The designer's inspiration led to the use of terrazzo, a modern building material with a lustrous texture reminiscent of traditional stones.

The design of Nanxiang Bailian stands out with its unique blend of functionality and artistry. Above Space carefully considered the practicality of various details, ensuring that the comfort of diners is prioritized. As the saying goes, "silence is more powerful than words." The design speaks volumes through its efficient operation and attention to detail.

The painted wooden screen adds a touch of warmth to the restaurant's cool terrazzo color scheme. It not only breaks the monotony but also enriches the overall color palette, creating a visually captivating space with depth and rhythm.

Covering a total area of 690 square meters, Nanxiang Bailian offers a spacious dining experience. The design team, consisting of Kaiwang Zhang, Wen Lin, and Guihua Lian, meticulously planned the layout to ensure optimal efficiency and comfort for each guest.

The lighting design of the restaurant incorporates multiple groups of point light sources, creating a play of light and shadow that adds dimension to the space. This design choice not only enhances the visual appeal of the facade but also caters to the specific lighting needs of each table.

The project, which commenced in July 2020 and concluded in November 2020, was carried out in Fuzhou. Above Space's research played a crucial role in the design process, with a focus on the seamless integration of traditional and modern elements. Every detail, from the vertical squares on the art roof to the use of ancient window support, reflects the harmonious coexistence of Chinese and Western influences.

Overcoming various challenges, such as finding the right balance between privacy and openness, Above Space ensured that the space remained inviting and comfortable even during peak hours. The restaurant's high-end positioning and practical requirements were carefully considered throughout the design process.

Nanxiang Bailian boasts more than 200 seats within its expansive 700-square-meter space. By optimizing the food-to-kitchen ratio and utilizing the available space effectively, Above Space allocated a generous 1.3 square meters per seat. The layout was meticulously planned, with square tables in the deck area and round tables in the box area, striking the perfect balance between space and efficiency.
